The Practical Driving Test

The purpose of a driving test is to check if you can drive safely and perform manoeuvres correctly.

  • The driving test lasts approximately 40 minutes.
  • The first part of your driving test will consist of an eyesight check.  You must be able to read a car registration plate at a distance of 20.5 metres.
  • The second part of the driving test consists of answering two vehicle safety check questions correctly (This is also known as Show Me, Tell Me).  If you fail to answer two questions correctly you will receive 2 driving faults/errors, these will be added on to your final driving faults at the end of the test.
  • If you commit less than 15 faults you will still pass your test.  If you receive 16 or more faults you will fail your driving test.  If you commit any serious or dangerous faults during your driving test you will fail your test.
  • During your driving test you will be examined on two of the following exercises :

    1. Turn In The Road (also known as 3 point turn).

    2. Reverse Parking.

    3. Reversing around a corner.

  • You may also be asked to perform an emergency stop
  • After the driving test the driving examiner will go through any faults you have made and will then tell you whether you have passed or failed.

Documents Required For The Driving Test

Before you take your driving test you will be asked to provide the following documents to show to the driving examiner

  • Provisional Driving Licence (The Photo Card and the Green Counterpart).

If you have an old style provisional driving licence (which does not have a photo), you will need to bring additional identification with you, such as a passport.
